Wilma Mankiller – Cherokee
Wilma Mankiller was born in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, on November 18, 1945. In 1985, Mankiller became the first female principal chief of the Cherokee Nation. She sought to improve the nation’s health care, education system and government. She decided not to seek re-election in 1995 due to ill health. After leaving office, Mankiller remained an activist for Native American rights and women’s rights until her death on April 6, 2010, in Adair County, Oklahoma.
Look at that BAMF^^^ I was almost named after this great lady, but my white mama thought “Wilma” wasn’t a “pretty” name. I got Nikki instead, I think Wilma would have been rad since Nikki has no real history behind it. Sure, my dad really liked this movie, however I could have been named after an awesome female Chief. Silly white mama, your name is Paula, maybe that’s why you wanted me to not be named after anyone and wanted it to be “pretty.”
